Update 292.

As Jesus taught us through His associations and interactions, you don’t have to resemble others to respect them and to show loving kindness. In this ever-increasingly divided world in which we live, where “interest groups, political camps, cultural factions and religious organizations are advancing their own vision of good,” differences will persist. It’s just life. But as followers of Jesus Christ, if we are to be the “light of the world,” a beacon of goodness, we need to do as the gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us. We need to love, be kind, avoid contention, be patient, reserve judgment for God, and forgive–over and over again.

In this increasingly divided world in which we live, differences will persist. But as followers of Jesus Christ, we need to love, reserve judgment, and forgive.

Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right that protects the conscience of all people. It allows us to think, express and act upon what we deeply believe. But around the world, and in the United States, this freedom is eroding. Churches, religious organizations and individuals face increasing restrictions as they participate in the public square, express their beliefs or serve in society. But there is much good that Church members and people of goodwill can do to preserve and strengthen religious freedom. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/official-statement/religious-freedom

Update 272.

The LDS Church’s call on Saturday to foster “fairness for all” in the debate surrounding religious liberty and emerging LGBTQ rights appropriately diverges from the U.S. Civil Rights Commission’s recently released report privileging nondiscrimination over religious freedom. The commission’s report issued Wednesday falls short of its stated aim of “reconciling” the often competing rights of religious liberty and nondiscrimination. Perhaps even more troubling, however, was the commission chairman’s statements that called into question the sincerity of religious freedom advocates and insinuated that religious freedom is often simply a cover for shameless bigotry. Questioning the motives of believers and summarily picking winners and losers in this debate, are yet mores signs of a growing secular dogma that places ideological purity above reason and reflection. Compare this approach with the tone and substance of the messages delivered on Saturday by top leaders and lawyers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns this paper. While candidly acknowledging that some today do in fact rank nondiscrimination “above the constitutional guarantee of free exercise of religion,” Elder Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, urged individuals to “respect” the current laws of the land that still “provide unique protections for believers and religious institutions.” Elder Oaks also discussed “fairness for all” as a proven path forward for our pluralistic society. Speaking at a regional religious freedom church meeting in Dallas for local Latter-day Saints, Elder Oaks used Utah as an example where groups from all sides of this issue came together to pass legislation that simultaneously advanced robust nondiscrimination ordinances as well as laws that protected the rights of religious institutions and believers. This package of legislation is often referred to in media accounts as the “Utah Compromise.

Update 271.

Full Talk: Elder Dallin H. Oaks Speaks at Religious Freedom Conference in Dallas

At a religious freedom conference for Latter-day Saints in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas, Elder Dallin H. Oaks encouraged members to get involved “in a constructive way in the vital contest for religious freedom.” Emphasizing messages he has shared previously, he counseled local Mormons to seek a cease-fire in the culture wars and to employ a “fairness for all” approach in defending religious freedom because our pluralistic world requires we “live peacefully” with each other. Elder Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was joined by Church general counsel Elder Lance B. Wickman and Elder Von G. Keetch of the Seventy. Their comments at this regional religious freedom conference (the first of its kind) coincide with the creation of a religious freedom page on LDS.org. Although religious freedom may seem a subject more fit for those with law and political science degrees, Elder Oaks said “literally everyone, from kindergarten children through the ranks of professionals and mothers and fathers and friends and neighbors can and should understand what religious freedom is and why it is important.” Elder Wickman recited a brief history of the struggle that was the creation of the United States Constitution, and he reminded Mormons that in addition to belonging to a church they are also citizens. It is “we the people” who are to “do the hard work of citizenship that is necessary to protect and preserve rights so painfully established” in America, he said. Like Elder Oaks, Elder Wickman urged Latter-day Saints to actively participate in today’s religious freedom discussions. He said the most important freedoms to protect are “those that relate to private and ecclesiastical contexts, or are part of the rights of all citizens.

Given the rich fruits of the two-year Synod process, this Exhortation will treat, in different ways, a wide variety of questions. This explains its inevitable length. Consequently, I do not recommend a rushed reading of the text. The greatest bene t, for families themselves and for those engaged in the family apostolate, will come if each part is read patiently and carefully, or if at- tention is paid to the parts dealing with their spe- ci c needs. It is likely, for example, that married couples will be more concerned with Chapters Four and Five, and pastoral ministers with Chap- ter Six, while everyone should feel challenged by Chapter Eight. It is my hope that, in reading this text, all will feel called to love and cherish family life, for “families are not a problem; they are rst and foremost an opportunity”.4

I don’t want to know. I’m not interested. I don’t want to hear about it and if you disagree with me I don’t like you.’ Or worse, ‘I hate you.'”

Update 145. Meeting the Challenges of Today – BYU Speeches – Neal A. Maxwell Oct 10, 1978

To me the following paragraph has been helpful for years. His use of Ironies is prophetic. The definition of Irony descriptive of today’s rhetoric.

We are now entering a period of incredible ironies. Let us cite but one of these ironies which is yet in its subtle stages: we shall see in our time a maximum if indirect effort made to establish irreligion as the state religion. It is actually a new form of paganism that uses the carefully preserved and cultivated freedoms of Western civilization to shrink freedom even as it rejects the value essence of our rich Judeo-Christian heritage.

This BYU Speeches archive is valuable to me and well maintained, to me the audio versions carry more spiritual impact.

Many Outlets Are Censoring Charlie Hebdo’s Satirical Cartoons After Attack

Here is a quote in-context that I believe is being violated too often leading to tragedy:

  • Soul singer Isaac Hayes has quit cartoon ‘South Park’ after an episodes lampooning religion.

The star who has provided the voice for character Chef since the show’s inception, has become upset at recent shows that have attacked spirituality.

“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins,” Hayes said in a statement after he announced he had been asked to be let out of his contract.

“Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honoured,” he added. “As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.”
