The Journal of Discourses (with concern)

Online, without tricky criticism, via WikiSource™ :

The Journal of Discourses.

From LDS.ORG here is the concern:

The Journal of Discourses includes interesting and insightful teachings by early Church leaders; however, by itself it is not an authoritative source of Church doctrine.

The Journal of Discourses is not an official publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a compilation of sermons and other materials from the early years of the Church, which were transcribed and then published. It included some doctrinal instruction but also practical teaching, some of which is speculative in nature and some of which is only of historical interest.

Search LDS.ORG

I am recording this testimony speaking to myself in the future, allowing you to overhear. I pray for my Lord’s protection whenever I read or view, more listening to the Holy Spirit than speaking/asking myself.

I initially read this when young to the result that the speakers increased my testimony in Christ and His restored gospel, not in its correctness but as an encouraging knowledge that my lord supports the (my) struggles to perfect that correctness. At times I speak too forcefully, in part I fear from memorizing too many JofD sections.

I turn to the Journal of Discourses when I want to read something that is being quoted, see Search above, as I have found these to be the sections of current valve and to see the quote in context to learn more. I have always gone away with a stronger testimony of Mormonism (LDS Church / Leaders).

For example, this is what started this research. The first slide is referenced at LDS.ORG, the second I had not found there yet, not saying it is not there just I have not found it yet.

Where is the record of his lengthy remarks, click here.

The following is Brigham Young, notice the use of “I” in his quote of Thomas B. Marsh:

What would Brigham Young have rather he said, for those present to learn? Again, notice the use of “I”.

I found this encouraging back when I first read this to now, as I trust in God to never feel that I have the entire strength in myself, that I have and will always need the strength and grace of my Lord to persevere me in my trials.

RESEARCH NOTES:

Reminder of how I did the search:

First. LDS.ORG search example, click here.

As with all/any searches if it goes some where else ignore them. There simply is not enough time to get off track.

Second. Cut and paste this into Google or other search engines:

Site:en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/journal_of_discourses

Result should start: http://en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/Journal_of_Discourses/

Example search

then add to the Search Box before first quote mark, keeping this base
