As you ponder on those matters today, let me suggest that, as someone once observed, “the question to be asked at the end of an educational step or sequence is not what has the student learned but what has the student become.”7
-
[By comparing this to a differing quote included below, I bolded the addition “or sequence” and there is a bad comma; a missing comma that changes the meaning, between “learned ‘bad comma’ and”. These together change the meaning from the larger “step” of the entire degree program and religious experiences at BYU, to the individual class “sequences ” each themselves, thus removing the larger change brought about by the overall educational and religious BYU experience.]
7. Senator Mark O. Hatfield, interpreting James Monroe’s views, in U.S. Senate special hearing, Education Reform: Hearing Before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, 103rd Congress, 1st session, 17 April 1993.
The differing quote comes from following BYU Law publication:
James Monroe said, “The question to be asked at the end of an educational step is not what has the student learned, but what has the student become.”

Publication page 19 (page 19 is PDF page 21 when viewing as an entire PDF only looking at the PDF page number) first partial paragraph’s last sentence
This entire publication I consider a major find, the quality and caring makes me proud of my Savior’s school and strengthens me.
